Did You Know These Facts About Saliva?
Posted on 6/20/2019 by Emerson Todd Rowley, DMD
We get it, saliva is frequently overlooked. After all, when you get right down to it, it is just spit. And it is. But saliva is also actually a lot more. In fact, saliva is not something to be spit out at all, no matter how bad you want to. Saliva is vital to your mouth, because it helps keep it healthy. How? Here are some facts about saliva. Saliva FactsYou produce enough saliva in your mouth to fill two bathtubs during the course of a year. That sounds like a lot of spit, but your saliva works hard. Food molecules have to dissolve in your saliva in order for you to even taste the food at all. Saliva protects your teeth and gums as well. The saliva in your mouth works to help you digest food, by making food softer, and breaking it down for you to swallow. Saliva works to help you absorb the minerals from your food as well. However, the most important function saliva has in your body is to break down food and bacteria and wash it away. Keeping bacteria out of your mouth means that the bacteria don't cause acids in your mouth, which leads to tooth decay- when the acids actually wear holes in the enamel. When your mouth doesn't have enough saliva, your mouth has a hard time making more. This is a problem, because without saliva to wash it away, bacteria can stay in your mouth longer and cause cavities, which can lead to infections. Mouth infections can cause other problems in your body as well, such as heart disease, increased risk of stroke, and complicate diabetes. Dry mouth is also responsible for bad breath as well. As you can see, saliva is very important. If you need help discovering whether or not you produce enough saliva, why not give us a call? We are full of tips and tricks to help you produce as much saliva as possible, which helps your mouth stay clean and healthy....
